Academics holding a PhD or conducting PhD research, and those who have (almost) completed their master's degree can apply for a fellowship to conduct research into the museum's collection. 

 

Dr. Ernst Crone Fellowship 

The Dr. Ernst Crone Fellowship is a one-time stipend of up to €25,000, including travel expenses, to conduct maritime historical research relating to objects in the collection of the Netherlands Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. The sum may be dispensed directly to the applicant or to their employer. The fellowship is open to academics holding a PhD. The fellowship may last a maximum of twelve months. This fellowship is currently not open to applications.

Van de Velde Fellowship

The Van de Velde Fellowship is a one-time stipend of up to €25,000, including travel expenses, to conduct maritime historical material-technical research relating to historical objects. Historical objects are a central source, and the collection of the Netherlands Maritime Museum in Amsterdam forms the starting point of the research. The sum may be dispensed directly to the applicant or to their employer. The fellowship is open to those who have completed a master’s degree or equivalent in restoration, and to academics conducting PhD research or holding a PhD. The fellowship may last a maximum of twelve months, the earliest starting date is 1 September 2026. It is possible to postpone the start of the fellowship, in consultation, up to 1 December 2026. The closing date for applications is 28 May 2026.

Prof. J.C.M. Warnsinck Fellowship 

The Prof. J.C.M. Warnsinck Fellowship is a one-time stipend of up to €5,000, including travel expenses, to conduct maritime historical research relating to objects in the collection of the Netherlands Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. This year it is possible for the first time to submit an application for a prof. J.C.M. Warnsinck Fellowship that is focused specifically on the maritime history, archaeology and culture of the province of Zeeland. The collection of the Netherlands Maritime Museum in Amsterdam and the collection of the Maritiem Muzeeum Zeeland in Vlissingen together serve as the starting point of research conducted for this fellowship. The sum may only be dispensed directly to the applicant. The fellowship is open to those who have (almost) completed their master’s degree. The fellowship may last a maximum of six months, the earliest starting date is 1 September 2026. It is possible to postpone the start of the fellowship, in consultation, up to 1 December 2026. The closing date for applications is 28 May 2026.
