‘What shall we do with the drunken sailor?’ The image of a tough sailor drinking strong liquor is inseparable in many maritime representations. But how much and what was drunk at sea? Recent research by fellow Charlotte Jarvis shows that on board Dutch vessels in the 16th to 19th century, it was mostly genever served, and a lot of it. Why is genever, still, so associated with Dutch seafaring?
