Celebrate Queer & Pride at The National Maritime Museum with a range of activities for all ages.

Everyone should be able to be themselves. It doesn’t matter where you come from, how you identify or who you’re in love with. We’ll be celebrating this during Pride Amsterdam with a range of activities on Sunday 26 July. There’s also the Pride reading club on 25 July and Pride Plastic Fishing on 2 August.

Art installation Pneuma by Marlot Meyer

Art installation Pneuma by Marlot Meyer

Inspired by the rhythm of the tides, Marlot Meyer created the art installation Pneuma, which you can become part of. She invites you to experience the body not as something fixed, but as an open system – interwoven with the water and the wind that move through it. Pneuma is on display from 24 to 26 July, with an interactive experience where Pneuma moves to the rhythm of your breathing on Sunday 26 July from 10.00 to 17.00 hrs.

Film: Queer Spaces at Sea

Film: Queer Spaces at Sea

In the 1960s, a relatively large number of gay crew members worked in the hotel service on board the ss Rotterdam. Former crew members Charles and Gillis talk about a group of gay crew members who shared a common identity and a strong sense of community. Watch the film from 26 July to 8 August.

Nailart by Eva Wagensveld

Nailart by Eva Wagensveld

Eva started her career as a fashion designer before becoming a nail artist. Her designs are true works of art. She specialises in 3D nail designs: eye-catching sets that combine fashion and craftsmanship. Each set is unique and handmade. This time, she has drawn inspiration from the extraordinary creatures of the deep sea. Think soft, jelly-like textures, shimmering details and playful shapes: a tribute to the wondrous underwater world. Sunday 26 July between 13.00 and 16.00 hrs.

Queertour

Queertour

What do drag queens and the East Indiaman have in common? And what was the queer community like on board the ss Rotterdam in the 1960s? Join our museum guides and explore the collection from a queer perspective. Sunday 26 July at 14.00 and 15.00 hrs (30 mins).

Love elfs

Love elfs

Come and write an ‘elfje’: an eleven-word poem. We’ll draw inspiration from love and longing. Make your poem your very own by decorating it with glitter and colours – in true Pride spirit. Nicchelle Buyne, a queer Surinamese-Dutch dreamer, poet and doer, will be leading the workshop. As a spoken word artist, she has performed at events such as Poetry International and Mensen Zeggen Dingen. Sunday 26 July from 13.00 to 15.00 hrs.
