On 10 and 11 October, the museum presents a dance theatre collaboration by Sites of Memory spanning the oceans, in which artists from The Netherlands, Sri Lanka and South Africa are working together.
Over the centuries, The Netherlands has left behind traces of power and systems of oppression. What do these places still mean today to the descendants of those who were enslaved and to communities whose histories, memories and experiences have long been overlooked?
Through dance, music, visual art and spoken word, the Sites of Memory collective, in collaboration with Space of Becoming, explores the lingering impact of colonial legacies, slavery and inequality on personal lives and contemporary societies. On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, the performance will launch an international artistic dialogue between The Netherlands, South Africa and Sri Lanka, bringing together diverse styles, languages and hidden histories. Gradually, space is created for encounter, exchange and the beginnings of healing. Drawing on their own backgrounds, memories and artistic traditions, the performers seek new connections and a shared language.
“What was once a place of confinement and control is now a space of resilience and connection.”
