For the first time, the schooner Tara is coming to The National Maritime Museum. On Saturday 29 & 30 April, the guest ship can be visited at the museum jetty.

The schooner Tara will dock  the museum jetty from 29 April to 2 May as part of its new scientific expedition to discover the biodiversity of European coastlines. The Tara Océan Foundation is conducting its 13th scientific expedition: Tara Europa. During its stopover in Amsterdam, Tara Ocean Foundation is organising various  activities in collaboration with the National Maritime Museum  on 29 and 30 April.

Program

Saturday afternoon 29 April 

  • Visit the ship between 2 pm and 5 pm in 30-minute time slots. Book a time slot here: Tara in Amsterdam
  • A story by volunteers of Tara on the ship's deck  
  • 2 pm | Talk with one of the artists that have joined the Tara expeditions 
  • 4 pm | Talk with a scientist who is currently travelling with the Tara expedition
  • Workshops from 2 pm to 5 pm including: an audio tour with a drawing workshop, an exhibition on the Tara,  viewing the Oosterdok water through a microscope, a search for microplastics and plankton with a microscope, and film screenings

Sunday 30 April

  • Visit the ship between 10.30 am and 4 pm in 30-minute time slots. Book a time slot here: Tara in Amsterdam

Tara Europa  

As part of EMBL's (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) TRaversing European Coastlines (TREC) program, the Tara EUROPA expedition will sail the European coastlines for two consecutive years over a distance of 13,780 nautical miles (25 520 km). For the first time, thanks to this expedition between land and sea, scientists will try to understand the interactions between these two ecosystems and will study the impact of human activities on this fragile ecosystem.
